Course Purpose

This course equips participants from a broad range of industries with the knowledge and skills to work safely on foot near live traffic and mobile plant in NSW. It focuses on hazard recognition, compliance with legal requirements, implementing safe work practices, and effective communication strategies to reduce risks.

The course will be fully contextualised to suit a specific industry or business requirement.

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum 16 years of age
  • Basic English literacy and numeracy skills
  • If working in construction – Completion of WHS General Construction Induction Training (White Card)
  • Physically fit to perform relevant tasks

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify hazards associated with working near mobile plant and live traffic.
  2. Apply the hierarchy of controls to reduce risk.
  3. Implement safe work procedures.
  4. Use positive communication techniques in high-risk environments.
  5. Establish safe and exclusion zones for mobile plant and traffic.
  6. Respond effectively to emergencies and incidents.

Delivery Mode

  • Face-to-face training: Classroom sessions with presentations, videos, and discussions.
  • Practical training: Simulated worksite setups for hazard spotting and safe zone establishment.

Training Duration

  • Total course time: 3 hours
    • 2 hours theory
    • 1/2 hour practical application
    • 1/2 hour theory assessment

  • Current legislation and AS
  • Relevant industry codes of practice
  • PPE: high-vis garments, hard hats, gloves, hearing protection
  • Various industry relevant scenario based videos
  • TfNSW and AfPA reference materials (for traffic controllers, civil construction workers etc)
  • Traffic Guidance Scheme examples (for traffic controllers, civil construction workers etc)
  • Cones, bollards, barriers
  • Crash attenuator (TMA) demonstration (for traffic controllers, civil construction workers etc) 

Assessment Overview

  • Knowledge Assessment: Multiple choice and short-answer questions on course theory
  • Practical Assessment:
    • Setting up exclusion zones and buffers
    • Demonstrating positive communication protocols
    • Identifying hazards and control measures in a simulated worksite

Assessment Method: Open book (with course notes available)

Certification
Successful participants will receive a Statement of Attendance – Working on Foot Near Traffic and Mobile Plant
