Course Description
This course is suitable for those people working in operational roles that are required to enter confined spaces (enclosed or partially enclosed) for the purpose of carrying out work or inspections. The course can be contextualised to suit the actual scenarios relevant to your organisations confined space operations. This course is designed to train participants how to identify confined space hazards, how to work safely within confined spaces according to an issued permit and how to operate various confined space safety equipment.
This course is not suitable for Standby persons or Observers as it is a generic course designed to cover the knowledge and skills required for entering and working in a confined space only which includes hazard identification and their typical control measures, entry permit roles and responsibilities and when it is appropriate for a person to enter and leave a confined space. Acting as a confined space standby person or observer requires additional knowledge and skills as described in the WHS Regulations 2017.
Delivery and Assessment Methods
This course is a face-to-face combination of theory and practical delivery with participants working through the course training materials with the trainer and in small groups. Participants will be required to sit a theory assessment which includes legislative and operational requirements. Participants will also complete practical assessments which includes the areas of gas detection and rescue equipment. All participants must pass all elements of the assessments to be successful.
Course content includes but is not limited to the following:
- Assessing and applying procedures for confined space entry
- Applying work instructions and agreed procedures
- Applying safety requirements
- Confirming entry permit meets regulatory requirements
- Confirming the emergency response procedure is with the stand-by person and understood
- Legal Requirements of the standby person
- Implement signage and barrier requirements
- Select tools and equipment for the task
- Positioning of rescue equipment by the entry point
- Ensuring the atmosphere is tested and monitored
- Tagging and lock-out procedures
- Enter the confined space correctly
- Maintaining communication with the stand-by person
- Complying with entry permit requirements
- Exit the confined space correctly
- Recover, clean and check tools, equipment and materials
- Conduct inspection of the confined space and secure
- Remove tagging and lock-out
- Accurately complete confined space entry permit
- Remove barriers and signs
Pre-requisites
Nil, however each participant should be reasonably physically fit and have level 2 Language, Literacy and Numeracy capabilities
Course duration
1 day face to face for the full course or 1/2 day for the refresher which is required at least every 3 years
