This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to handle dangerous goods and hazardous substances, including identifying requirements for working with dangerous goods and/or hazardous substances; confirming site incident procedures; and selecting handling techniques. The training will assist the participant to be able inspect work sites in which they are required to work in, identify hazardous substances or dangerous goods by reviewing signage, product labeling or information. From this identification the participant will be then able to conduct a risk assessment and implement risk control measures, including safe working procedures for handling, storing or transporting the hazardous substances or dangerous goods. This course is suitable for anyone at the workplace who may be required to handle dangerous goods or hazardous substances or who may work in an area where hazardous substances or dangerous goods are stored or handled.

Course assessment: At the conclusion of the face to face component, participants must be able to satisfy the assessor that they can: Identifying dangerous goods/hazardous substances (from labels, ADG (which the Australian Dangerous Goods Code Road and Rail) markings, HAZCHEM signs and other relevant identification criteria) – Identifying job and site hazards – Minimise risks selecting appropriate equipment and work systems including personal protection These elements will be assessed using a workplace scenario situation where participants will look at a worksite and identify what hazardous substances or dangerous goods are present on that site. Participants will then be issued with a MSDS for the hazardous substance and will be required to answer a number of questions that relate to the MSDS.
